Toy Dolls - Cheerio and Toodlepip
I can't even remember how I was turned onto The Toy Dolls but somehow, in my teenage years, I could be caught singing wacky tracks like "Nellie The Elephant", "Spiders In The Dressing Room", and "James Bond Lives Down Our Street". You do have to admit that they were something of a novelty act but to last as long as they did they must have had a few fans besides myself. I seem to be alone when I start naming them off though. Anyway, I didn't have any Toy Dolls on CD besides one live album ("22 Tunes Live From Tokyo") so it was time for a compilation when Cheerio and Toodlepip came about. This is a double album that has just been released on Castle Music and there are plenty of songs on here that I have never heard. Besides the classic tracks that I've mentioned above (Nellie is on here in two versions) some of the standouts include "I've Got Asthma", "Cloughy Is A Bootboy", and the title track of this compilation. Another one that gets me in stitches is "Olga...I Cannot", the story of some mismatched geek lovers.
The guys couldn't possibly sing with a thicker British accent and really couldn't have had more fun. So while all the British punks were screaming about the establishment, Toy Dolls led the way for fun punk that groups like NOFX and Green Day borrowed from heavily. This is a fun compilation and introduction to one of punk's forgotten about bands. If you don't think comedy and music mix, fuck off.
