This so called "freak-folk" movement is getting out of hand. What have you done Devendra? To be completely honest with you, this music has been around for quite some time but it's only now that it is getting any recognition of sorts, as is the case for lots of fad music. Ben Chasney of both Six Organs of Admittance as well as Comets On Fire has been busy this year. August Born is an album that he manages to get Hiroyuki Usui of the band Fushitsusha and L by the suggestion of a music journalist (we're good for something!). What we get is an even gentler version of Six Organs complete with Japanese vocals. Even though the two never actually sat down together (everything was done in their respective countries) the August Born project seems to hold water. The album starts off a little free form, sort of like they are warming up, with "Blues To Begin" then ease us into "A Thousand Butterflies", the first track with vocals. World music fans might enjoy the culture clash here as well as the new folk movement fans. It's rough around the edges but that leads to some unsuspecting charm.
