In a just world, Super Furry Animals would be one of the biggest bands in the world. But in reality, they enjoy a modicum of success in the UK, and on the other side of the pond, they remain a non-entity.
A single listen to "Love Kraft", SFA's seventh album, strongly solidifies the sheer enormity of the band's greatness. Opening with "Zoom", a seven minute slice of Beatlesque psychedelia laced with a doomy choral section and grandiose string figures, Love Kraft demonstrates that the band's last effort "Phantom Power", the reserved paean to west-coast psych/folk/pop was a mere diversion.
"Love Kraft" reintroduces the loopy sonics and sing-song attributes that were sadly missing from "Phantom Power", and for the first time, other band members contribute songs. The highlights belong to frontman Gruff Rhys, but "Atomik Lust", by drummer Dafydd Ieuan is a standout - a loping melodic gem that bursts into a guitar-driven freakout.
10 years into their recording career, SFA achieves the nigh-impossible - "Love Kraft" is the calling card of a band that refuses to stay in one place, always evolving and forever astounding. Here's to hoping that "Love Kraft" reaches more ears -and blows a lot of minds.
