It's funny to think now that Jonathan Fire*Eater was Dreamworks big hope for alternative music back in the mid-90s. Basically Dreamworks was just 5 years ahead of the rest of the world. If you listen to this New York band now (they are since defunct) you will hear a dirty version of beloved Spoon. You might even hear some leanings towards critical darlings The Walkmen (of which a few of the members of Jonathan Fire*Eater belong). It really was no wonder that these guys didn't really make a go of it back in the day of pop music. There was just a little too much grit thrown in but I challenge any fan of indie music today to either dust off their own copy of Wolf Songs For Lambs or track it down and give it a try today. You may find your new favorite band in Jonathan Fire Eater. Stewart Lupton has a voice that has to be heard. He sounds drunk but in a "he sounds better after a few" sort of way. The band was never meant to be a commercial success but this album documents a band that was ahead of their time. If you like this, then check out the other offshoot band called the Recoys.
