Recorded during his legendary 1975 Japan shows (this is the first set), Miles throws down the heaviest funk of his career, hell, of anyone's. Guitarist Pete Cosey and bassist Michael Henderson are absolutely SICK, unhinging with an improvisational power that would make Sonny Sharrock or Beefheart load up their drawers. Cosey in particular, one the strength of this record alone, is one of the all-time great improv guitarists. The whole bruising affair is brought to deeper and deeper levels by Miles' spare, insinuating tone, weaving in and out of the storm to push for more chaos. "Prelude I and II" give the best of the JB's a run for its money, and the version of "Theme From Jack Johnson" shreds the original. The second, afternoon set of this gig, Pangea, is joltingly more mellow. With this set, they said it all and there was nowhere for them, or anyone else, to go, except into silence.
