I Am The Fun Blame Monster is the kind of debut that band's dream about. It is clever, fun, and quirky while staying fairly original. Portland's Menomena is the band to blame for this album but trust me, it ain't no Monster. Obviously I caught onto this album a little late as the release date is back in 2003. The band is quite experimental with loops and such but the pop feel to their songs is quite evident. When you name your band after a Muppets skit you can't help getting the audience ready for a fun album. Some of the songs seem to be fairly simplistic but once you start to see all the layers revealed then you realize that there is much more to these. This threesome is capable of writing some amazing pop songs even if they are just based on a simple sample at times. The quiet and minimal breaks lead to a denser album (see "Strongest Man In The World" for a good example). Find this album and listen to it often.
I've had some people question why I review older albums such as this. When I miss out on albums this good the first time around I feel that others might have done the same. Good music is always waiting to be heard and it doesn't have to be the same year an album is released. Enjoy music for what it is, an aural fixation.
