It's been a long time since an album this beautiful has come out of Calgary. And who would have thought that it was going to be Chad VanGaalen to put it out. It may take a couple listens to Infiniheart before you are taken with Chad's interesting vocals and songwriting style but it isn't a far reach from that of, say Iron & Wine only a little more pop focused. The strong album starts out with "Clinicly Dead", probably the most rocking track on Infiniheart. The spooky "Kill Me In My Sleep" has me sweating in my sleep now. It's a dark song in a bouquet of roses. And just when you think you have Chad figured out he throws a bleepy mess at you called "Dolphinariums". You can't generalize with VanGaalen either. His songs are anywhere from 2 - 6 minutes long and while most of the songs are gentle there is quite a diversity in the 19 songs. One of my favorite songs on the album is an instrumental called "J.C.'s Head On The Cross". It reminds me of something that King Cobb Steelie might have done. After listening to Infiniheart a couple times you will know why there was a bit of a bidding war on Chad VanGaalen. This is as impressive a debut album as a solo artist could hope for.
