The sound on Jazztronik's "Samurai" varies but concentrates on Ryota Nozaki's piano arrangements. The electric piano's sound is round and puffy, and after getting comfortable with the predictable minor chords and repetitions i started to feel a little tired and drunk. Because of this, it surprises me that DJ's such as Danny Krivit, Gilles Peterson, Louie Vega, DJ Spinna and Jazzy Jeff are known to heavily rotate his album. "Samarai" definitely did not motivate me to get up and dance but quite the opposite, I found myself staring at a blank wall while listening to it. I doubt this is a positive thing for this genre of music.
"Things we like" is a conversation between two women discussing the things they like, which is kind of boring. They list cliche activities like talking with friends, warm days of summer, trees, and flowers. The worst part is that the song is extremely good when they decide to actually sing instead of awkwardly babble.
A better track on this album is 'Colour of Days' which, though sticks to a more traditional jazz style, is well arranged and easy to listen to. With the exception of 'Colour of Days,' I would have enjoyed this album much better without the unnecessary "vocal delights from Yurai and Aya," scattered though most of the tracks on "Samurai."
