Free The Bees marks the sophomore album for the band from the Isle of Wight called A Band of Bees (or just The Bees to some). What has this Mercury-prize nominated band been up to since its debut? Well after a much needed break they headed back into the studio and recreated their sound, slightly. What do I mean by that? Well, the guys have gone with much more of a retro sound along the lines of Ocean Colour Scene or even back as far as the Monkies, The Hollies, Moby Grape or even The Zombies. Listening to Free The Bees is like going through a time-machine. There are so many nods toward the British music of yesteryear that one has to ask if it is even worth-while. I would argue yes, the band brings some new sound to the old sound. Sure, it sounds almost instantly familiar but that's the beauty of it. The album isn't ingenious but a nod towards the bands influences. They use the harmonies that those older UK bands were so good at and prove that they can handle it quite nicely.
