At first this would seem to be an odd, if not shocking pairing of guitarists. While Derek Bailey has set new standards for guitar improvisation with each record, it is rarely that Pat Metheny bares his teeth. Too often his records sound like insular dreamwork: essential to those who get it, sleep-inducing for those who don't. On this 3 disc set, (2 of them live) he more than keeps up with Bailey, and the results are intense and satisfying. This is Metheny in Song X or Zero Tolerance for Silence mode. Bailey is Bailey; fearless, tangential, and atonally gorgeous. The studio disc is more structured, and allows the band to develop the ideas and direction of the tunes that would serve as points for expansion on the live sets. Drummer Bendian, as always, keeps the rhythm while at the same time helping to push the ideas forward: kind of like a lead drummer.
