Just when you think you have the pulse of the underground hip-hop scene a new artist comes along and rips one under the radar. Blueprint is that artist for 2005. After doing some research for this review I discovered that he in charge of the Weightless label and has been a DJ for many years. I have never heard a new rapper have a grasp on old school hip hop as much as Blueprint. His sound is so obviously old school but don't hold that against him. His style seems so fresh and innovative regardless. Blueprint seems to have it out for the mainstream rappers with many a song focused on that topic. Apparently he also has a thing for fat girls ("Big Girls Need Love Too"). That song comes off close to a Fresh Prince song. In fact, Blueprint does nod many times in the old school direction. "Fresh" utilizes some heavy vocal beatboxing. But damn, 1988 is a great album and one of the years best hip hop album to come out.
