Raymond Raposa's Castanets have already choked out their second release in just as many years. First Lights Freeze is the name of the album and if you are following you might hear a slight improvement over Ray's debut album. It's still got that folky side of things but on tracks like "No Voice Was Raised" we see how outside the box the Castanets can write their songs. It seems as if the gang is trying to experiment with their sound that they came up with on Cathedral. For the most part, First Lights Freeze is a gentle affair with Raymond's voice soothing the listener to backgrounds of varying music. I hear a little bit of Mercury Rev on "All That I Know" and a couple other songs. It's the similarity between Raposa and Donahue's vocals that sparks this comparison. Think of Castanets as a rootsier and more basic Mercury Rev. It's not an instant album but one that will make it's way into your heart if given the time.
