New York music will never forget heroin. From the Velvets to Suicide to The Knitting Factory, the city has and will always produce bands that nod menacingly in the corner at your partner and plan ruin. The Double's press release compares this debut to the Talking Heads first record, but this is a different kind of quirky, and, Being from Providence, I have to say that the Heads were a Rhode Island band first. The Double are more in cahoots with Warhol films and squalid Jim Carroll blow jobs. The moodiness of "On Our Way", "In The Fog", and "Hot Air" are relieved only by the distorted wash of guitar that momentarily drowns out the disturbed keyboard and bored-Nico vocals. A fine reminder that being risky is still on the table for some bands.
