The Earlies are a band that are half American and half English. They have been around for a few years now but with the release of this compilation of self-released singles and a couple of EPs, on Secretly Canadian the rest of the world gets to revel in the joyous sounds of the Earlies. They have some similarity to that of The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev but I think that if you left it at that you would be selling the talented band short. The production is quite as pristeen as the afformentioned bands but the layering of vocals and such is indeed there. Some songs like "Bring It Back Again" show how the band is capable of layering vocals and presenting a very thick sound without getting too heavy. The band achieves its trans-atlantic feat by sending ideas back and forth and These Were The Earlies show how successful those ideas became. In 2004 the band finally got together and took an 11 piece band on tour to play these songs in a live setting. They have gotten quite the praise for both their recorded sounds as well as their live sounds. The music is something that needs to be heard and absorbed in order to fully appreciate what The Earlies are all about. The more you listen to the album the better it becomes. I do love the flute in songs like "Slow Man's Dream" and others.
