I think the Ethiopiques series is up to 12 volumes now, but this is the best. Ethiopia absorbed more American funk and soul to incorporate into local rhythms than any country this side of Jamaica. Girma Beyene's three songs trip along in a kind of Lounge-y Doors sound (or is that redundant?). Lemma Demissen's straight ahead Ska miexes well with Ayalew Mesfin and Alemayehu Eschet's hard funk, complete with James brown grunting and face-stabbing guitar. Based on this series, and other recent Funk and Psych comps, Western Africa has been a hotbed of local and world fusion since the sixties, creating a badass stew of Soul since then, absorbing the various styles with a true understanding of their spirit. Check this out, then listen to Madonna and Jamie Foxx try out the funk, and weep.
