You may remember my gushing review of Six Organs of Admittance's School of the Flower. Well, I decided to go back and see what I was missing from Ben Chasney's experimental group and looked to Dust and Chimes to give some indication of if I would like any of their past material. This album proves my hunches right and while Dust and Chimes tends to be a little more experimental than School it still holds together nicely for a music fan who isn't a big fan of improvisation. There are much more middle eastern influences at play here but Ben keeps everything westernized enough for me. There is enough evidence here to warrant credit to Chasney for one of the founders of the so called "freak folk" movement. If you can make it through the 10+ minutes of "Journey Through Sankuan Pass" then you are ready for what Six Organs of Admittance has to offer. The rest of the songs are much shorter and much more concise. Another album worth checking out from the San Francisco area.
