Cat Power - The Greatest
Chan Marshall returns with her "Greatest" album to date. And I do think that The Greatest is one of Cat Power's finest moments. It has everything that previous efforts contained as well as some very fine musicianship in the studio musicians she recorded with in Memphis. The Greatest is the album that Beth Orton wished she could put out. It has the heartbreaking moments of previous Cat Power albums and yet there but adds an Americana flavor that we have only caught a glimpse of before. Now there are now real stand out tracks like on You Are Free but The Greatest seems more like a whole package and that Chan was focusing on making an "album" instead of just a set of songs. They all compliment each other and provide the listener with a beautiful journey while still breaking hearts along the way. But, if I did have to pick a favorite it would be the slow shuffle of "Willie". Chan sounds simply divine on this track. Like a true classic. The Greatest will appeal to many people who have never been into Cat Power before, as well as long time fans. It's nice to see Marshall move in new directions.

While i cannot speak of Chan Marshall's growth in this album for I am a new listener to Cat Power, I can speak of how good Cat Power's CD "The Greatest" is. With beautiful medlies of piano and Chan's soft and emotionally charged vocals "The Greatest" really is a great album. The first song of the set, The Greatest, is arguably the high point of the album. The next best song, in my opinion, is Living Proof. The lyrics are emotional and are really well constructed. While her lyrics and music can be compared to that of, Connor Oberst, Chan brings you something Connor cannot, a womens voice and emotions. Her vocals are soft and very refined. She has one of the best voices of the genre and is truely unique. I agree with the original review in that it brings new listeners while still being loyal to its' old listeners. The only knock I have on this album is that towards the end it became very tidous. It seems like she picked one blueprint for the songs and stuck to it. It is a ridiculously good album and yet you seem to lose interest towards the finish.
