I know I'm way behind in reviewing Leslie Fiest's Let It Die album, with her being from Calgary and such but it's always better late then never. Anyway, Let It Die is Feist's second solo outing but may as well be her first because this is so different that her previous effort, Monarch. Sure, in that time frame Leslie has been through a lot of different music endeavors (By Divine Right, Broken Social Scene, Peaches, Kings of Convenience, Apostle of Hustle) which helped her grow tremendously since her days with the much loved Calgary band Placebo. Let It Die is a beautiful album in every way. I can't help but envision Sade doing "One Evening", yeah, it's that sexy. "Inside and Out" is a very cool disco style track with some pretty fun guitar going on. But I would have to say one of my favorite tracks on Let It Die is Feist's take on another Canadian, Ron Sexsmith's "Secret Heart". She injects so much love and originality into the song without losing the songs charm. I think on Feist's next album she should stick to doing her originals though. This one is half and half. But she takes a nod from the French in taking a classic song and making it her own. But have a listen to "Mushaboom" and it'll have you singing for days. Let It Die is a great Canadian record.
