Twisting country folk in order to squeeze out every ounce of bite and grit from the category gives the body and brains behind Rilo Kiley; Jenny Lewis an irreplaceable, enchanting and earnest vibe. The haunting beginning that is conjured up by the soulfully bolshie number; ‘Run Devil Run’, propels Jenny’s commanding and versatile vocal prowess. A touch of hearty soul is sprinkled over matters in ‘Rise Up With Fists’ that has an almost hymn feel, as the influence of Beth Nielsen Chapman shows this songstress indulging in some fateful philosophising.
Unerring crispness binds together this well thought out and humbling offering that reaches its plateaux in the worried ‘Happy’, a number that features grippingly echoing vocals that mark each poetic point made about life. The erstwhile and longing country feel is given off via ‘The Charging Sky’, drawing together all political viewpoints, as well as in the caustic story of ‘Rabbit Fur Coat’.
There are well timed interventions from Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie fame and Mr.Bright Eyes himself; Conor Oberst in the vibrant cover of The Travelling Wilbury’s song; ‘Handle With Care’. They make a neat contribution to the flighty and friendly atmosphere projected in this musical parade. Jenny Lewis puts graft, thought and her colourful personality into everything that she does, thus earning a growing reputation for producing thought provoking and relaxing music.

The album Rabbit Fur Coat is Jenny Lewis. It defines her, it defines what she does, and it defines the music he makes. The writing is poetic and emotional. She crafts every song and even the song placement methodically and builds it into something beautiful. With songs like "Handle With Care" featuring Ben Gibbard, who is one of the most amazing singer/songwriters of our humble generation, she gives you something few others can. She makes you truely care about the music and genuinely sad when this album is over. With Connor Oberst even popping in for a song, this album is an indie fan's wet dream. Jenny Lewis knew exactly what she was doing when she took her emotionally angelic voice and paired it with the two dare i say most important writers and performers of the genre. What was she doing you ask.........She was making one of the best indie albums of the year. Even when alone like in the song ""Rabbit Fur Coat" she makes you honestly feel something for her and to be completely honest , I fell in love with Jenny Lewis through out the course of this album. Rabbit Fur Coat is one or two songs short of being a classic.

Dear Jenny, Hi, How’s it going? I’ll go ahead and tell you that you’ve made one of the most emotionally vivid albums in recent years. Right off the bat, with “Big Guns” and “Rise Up With Fists”, you relay a need for hope that is clever and still sounds like page from your life. Songs like “Happy” and “Melt Your Heart” are as seductive as they are reflective. “Rabbit Fur Coat” was one of the best songs of the year. A tale that seems timeless and sad enough that you wouldn’t want it to be based in fact. The recurring theme of religion gives many of the songs a southern canvas that accents the other colors and affords them more meaning. So with that, I’ll float a Standing Marriage Proposal out there. You know…. You’re in Nebraska a lot. I live here. I could drive you to the studio or airport. Whatever. Anyway, have a wonderful New Year and I can’t wait for a follow-up. Sublogic XOXO
