Electrelane has never really grabbed my attention but I sort of got into The Power Out. Axes is their latest effort and it is a far cry from their last album. This one is much more experimental, approaching the avant status with some noisy instrumentals like "Business or Otherwise". The album is aggressive and cutting edge but I found it hard to get into. The opening track ("One, Two, Three, Lots") is cinematic and sprawling in nature. The second track, "Bells" is the finest moment on Axes. It has a metronomic feel to it that is very pleasing and when the vocals final click in it really sounds heavenly. "Two For Joy" sounds like it could be a Belle And Sebastian song. The 7+ minutes of "Gone Darker" felt like a waste of time though. The same with "Business or Otherwise", a little too experimental for my tastes. So in essence, I found Axes to be very hit and miss.
