Now why am I finding out about Roisin Murphy almost 6 months after Ruby Blue was released? This album is more forward thinking than pretty much any other female pop act to come out in the past few years. You might remember her name from the under-appreciated Moloko, an electro-pop act from a few years back. Ruby Blue was released in the UK with a series of 12-inch vinyl singles and then the CD was released after all of the vinyl was released. The production on Murphy's songs was done by the resilient Matthew Herbert and it proves to add some dimension to the songs that have to be heard to understand. The music is totally pop oriented but there is some very fine experimentation going on with the backing instrumentation. The album starts out with "Leaving The City", with some frantic samples and keyboards bringing us in. Roisin's vocals work to ground the track before it takes off into the ozone. The instrumentation takes many leads from Bjork but really, Murphy's album could easily hit mainstream with a little push from radio. Songs like "If We're In Love" could rocket up the charts and it doesn't even need the remix treatment. Ruby Blue is a fantastic debut for the former Moloko vocalist.
