I haven't been the biggest Daniel Lanois fan in the past. Sure, I own his first two solo albums and think they are decent but I haven't "fallen in love" with his stuff. That all changed with the beautiful instrumental album Belladonna. It's been a few years since his last solo output (which is understandable with the amount of production work he gets) so I think fans were dying for some more of Lanois signature sound. Belladonna is a different album that what I was expecting. Different in a good way. Number one: this is all instrumental. Daniel does no singing, opting for his guitar and wonderfully warm production to take over instead. There is a lot of his slide guitar and he ends up reminding more of Bill Frisell or Brian Eno (his trusty sidekick) than Beauty of Wynona. Belladonna is a very gentle album with many a highlight. If you are a fan of instrumental, ambient guitar music then this is indeed the album for you. Frisell fans need apply.
