I've never been a huge Swearing At Motorists fan but I've always kept my eye and ear on them. I feel that Dave Doughman has a lot of potential and while there has been many moments of brilliance in the past, moments on pretty much every album, the most consistent effort has to be Last Night Becomes This Morning. This album shows Doughman in a number of different positions and experimenting with a few other styles other than indie-pop. I think my favorite track is the understated "This Is No How Forever Begins". Just Dave and a guitar take us where he has a hard time going. They bring us back into happiness on "Waterloo Crescent", one of the album's most fun songs. This sort of variety is what makes this album so solid. "Slave To The Kettle" bares the band's punk teeth as well as a few other songs.
So with Swearing At Motorists label, Secretly Canadian, in the spotlight right now. It might be time for this band to reach a much wider audience than in the past. But then again, they may have missed the boat. Either way, Last Night is a good album, a solid album that Dave and company should be proud of.
