Canadian Bassist Simon Fisk improves on his compositions with this second record, expanding on his ideas and creating more song structure than on his debut. That said, the tunes here more than allow enough room for him, pianist Chris Gestrin and drummer Tom Foster to explore some free pastures. And they groove aggressively. The Gospel feel of “A Better Day settles into a nasty groove, while “Live In The Ideal is almost giddy in its backbeats. “Some Sort of Spiritual and “Seven Oceans place Fisk in the top rung of jazz bass players. Why is this guy not huge? Buy some of his records and spread the word.
