Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
Destroyer is a band that I've had a hard time getting into. That is until now. Destroyer's Rubies is the type of album that someone could come back to time and time again for consolation and comfort. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the pop prowess from The New Pornographers is wearing off on Dan Bejar. I know I should have liked Destroyer before this point but fact is, Bejar just didn't grab me. Something about the first track on Rubies (the title track), which is over 9 minutes, grabbed me and my attention and I was drawn right into his amazing song. He then had my undivided attention for the rest of the 50 minutes. I think this may have been my issue with previous releases, I would listen to them without focusing properly. I love his voice, his phrasings, his songs, his arrangements. One thing I do struggle with is the man's literate lyrics. That's the hardest part of Destroyer. I can't help but feel that this man knows more than me. Maybe I can learn a thing or two from Bejar now that I'm paying attention.
