Usually being mentioned with the likes of Neil Young, Waylon, John Prine, etc., is the kiss of death. What at first seems like an articulate new Dylan often ends up a fey Billy Joel. Not is Jeff Black's case. This tough, hard-won wisdom and story songs come from real experience, and his observations on regret and loss are on the money. His absorption of American music shows confidently in the gritty "Hard Way Out" a rocker like "Libertine" the sad ballad "Nineteen", and "Heaven Now." He sings in "Closer": "Where the folly/ is forgotten/will you meet me there?" These are songs familiar with, but not yet resigned, to folly. But they leave room for not being alone while trying to figure things out. In that way, Jeff Black is one with the knowing.
