Dirty Three from Australia is another one of those bands that I've never considered myself a fan of but every time I get the opportunity to listen to one of their albums I am fascinated by their talent. Cinder marks the band's 7th studio album since their inception in 1992. They have pretty much all of the instruments that you have come to expect from the sombre group. And for the first time in the history of Dirty Three we are presented with a couple tracks with vocals, provided by Sally Timms ("Feral") and Cat Power ("Great Waves"). All of the music here still has that oceanic feel, it has a gentle ebb and flow like a calm sea. They rarely get moving into a rough sea making it a consistent, although not completely rewarding listen.
I can't help but feel that it would be unnecessary to own all of the Dirty Three's output. One or two albums are really all you need to accent your collection because the music really is achingly beautiful. You may as well throw Cinder down as the one to get if you haven't heard Dirty Three before.
