RecommendOn this eponymous album Apollo Sunshine are able to go through pretty much any pop category really nicely. The album starts with the clever switch up on "Flip". It goes along nicely like a surf-style and then they switch up to the best Big Star song ever. Tell me your parents wouldn't like the rockabilly feel they exude on the fun "Today Is The Day". The pop mastery comes through in "Phony Marony". And the groove they get going on the instrumental "The Hotter The Wetter The Better" is unreal. Then I don't know what to think of "Lord". It's a crazy jam that seems to change up at least 4 times throughout the 5 minute song. I love it! I know I use diverse in my reviews a lot but it is one key element that I look for in a good band. Apollo Sunshine has that quality and it is ever present on this album.
