I've been following the career of Quasi for quite some time but I happened to miss Hot Shit. I don't know how or why but it slipped right through my fingers. Regardless, here we are at their latest album, When The Going Gets Dark, and album that Dave Fridmann took on mixing duties after producing Janet Weiss' other band, Sleater-Kinney. The results are very impressive. And what the hell? It sounds like Dave Fridmann has brought a little of the Flaming Lips or Mercury Rev into Quasi as well on songs like "Beyond The Sky" and an overall feel that their albums have never had. Then they dive headlong into a mindfuck of a song "Presto Change-o" with some crazy sampling and piano playing happening. My favorite is the jerky "I Don't Know You Anymore". You can hear some big improvements in Sam's voice on "Peace and Love". In the end, we are presented with the biggest, boldest Quasi album that Coomes and Weiss have crafted. While the album is a bit angular it is surprisingly cohesive.
