I'm quite excited to see a lot of interest in this band, even if it does stem from John Crossingham's relation with Broken Social Scene. If you are expecting something as big as BSS in Raising the Fawn, let you be warned that this is a much gentler and more personal affair. And damn, is it ever gentle. It's tracks like the album closer "Nocturne No. 2" that just send shivers down your spine. It is just a gentle finger picked guitar and John's lovely voice to lull you to sleep just before the album comes to a close. The album does start out fairly large with "Carbon Paper" (actually the second track after the brief intro). But when they move into the title track, we are shown just how gentle and precious Raising The Fawn can be just before you hear them plug in their guitars. The Maginot Line is a great third album that should easily get this Canadian band many more fans. Definitely one of my favorites so far this year.
