The trio of Berlin brothers have banded together to bring you The Living Things. Ahead of the Lions is the band's debut album (it was originally released in the UK as Black Skies in Broad Daylight) and it hints at good things to come. The album was recorded by Steve Albini and production is very good. I had a hard time with The Living Things though because tracks like "March In Daylight" felt like they were trying to make me like the chorus by repeating it over and over. It's too bad they didn't cut the song back and only repeated the chorus once. I like the dancey feel to "Monsters of Man". There are many times where they remind me of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club as well like on "God Made Hate", not quite as fuzzy but the same sort of feel. Maybe even the Dandy Warhols at times.
While promotion companies are trying to say that this is hard and heavy, fact of the matter is that Living Things play it fairly safe. Thing is, they have some pretty big potential. The sound on Ahead Of The Lions show room for mass approval. Maybe that's what they are after.
