I didn't see it before but on Broken (and Other Rogue States) Luke Doucet is sounding very much like Josh Rouse. That's a good thing. There should be more Josh's around. Luke's music is country but not really. It's pop but not really. It borders both without actually crossing too far into either territory. The thing about Doucet's songs is that they aren't instantly memorable but if you give it a bit of time they seep into your soul so deep that they are hard to go without. Tracks like "Lucky Strikes" are depressing but the upbeat tempo get people into the depressing lyrics. Then a track like "Wallow" dives right into the most desperate of emotions. This sort of play keeps going through the entire album. As most songwriters seem to go, Luke seems to be slowly moving a little more into the pop territory. Luke is already a master songsmith. I really hope that Luke Doucet gets some recognition for his music. It really deserves it.
