Fear is on our Side is the debut full-length album for the Austin Texas group I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness. Their introduction EP was produced by Spoon's Britt Daniel and apparently was much poppier than this affair. Upon first glance the name seems cool. But try typing it or saying a dozen times. It gets to be a bit of a chore. Also, the big problem with a name that large is the vision that this is an emo band. And in fact, they are anything but The Darkness. This is moody music made by moody musicians. If Joy Division was around today, they could ride this wave right to the bank. But we don't have Joy Division anymore so we are left with bands such as this that are heavily influenced. For me, as little as three listens I was totally sold on Chosen Darkness. These guys are very talented and while their music is very atmospheric it tends to work well on the headphones while working. Clever songs like "We Choose Faces" build up slowly and surely. I don't know how relevant I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness is when we have Interpol and Editors and quite a few others experimenting with the sound that Joy Division started but I quite enjoy it. It hinges on retro new wave but they all seem to take it in a different direction.
