This is mellow yet soulful acoustic pop that never goes limp. This is his seventh release since moving from Austin to Minneapolis, both place of almost fame. Though he has won awards galore for certain songs or records in the past, this record might give him some more elbow room in the spotlight. This are raw, self-aware tunes that avoid the navel-gazing traps of the genre.
"In The Cards," "Be By Me" "Settle With Me", "Written on my Face" are stripped down tunes that flay open both the hopes and disillusions of relationships, with little intimacy saved for reserve. More people ought to notice Dan Israel with this one; his writing has gotten stronger and more direct, and this stripped-down setting suits his vision well.
