Erik Friedlander seems intent on not giving up until he has explored the deepest possibilities of every note on the cello. Never self-indulgent, always sensitive to how various sounds can deepen his own visions, this is another triumph. Coming off the success of the magisterial Maldoror, this is a set that draws sublty from funk and tribal rhythms. Not surprisingly, drummer/percussionist Satoshi Takeishi shines, as does his brother, bassist Stomu Takeishi. A workout of the standard "A Close Walk With Thee" showcases that sensitive but groovy bottom, over which Friedlander layers his lines. Equally rich are "Howling Circle" and "Chanting." Never one to be anything less than open to his surroundings, alone or with a band, Erik Friedlander continues with this record to make a personal statement on his chosen instrument that will be tough to follow.
