It's hard to believe that it has been 3 years since Centro-Matic put out the impressive Love You Just The Same. Sure, they had the Flashes and Cables EP out in 2004 but for full-lengths, its been a while. Anyway, I really fell for Love You Just The Same so my hopes were very high for Fort Recovery. First listen was disappointing but as early as the second listen to it I started to love it. A reviewer's golden rule: Never review an album after only listening to it once. It is tempting due to the overwhelming amount of music we receive but it would never be fair because so much good music takes time to warm up to. "For New Starts" is one of the sunniest songs of the set. And I think the thickest and heaviest track these guys have recorded is "Monument Sails". While not aggressive, the production is almost too thick. I like it. It's hard not to note a depressing overtone to Fort Recovery but I guess that's just Centro-Matic looking for the torch for the No Depression genre. This is a great album, maybe not quite as instant and likeable as Love You Just The Same but Will Johnson should be commended for his consistency.
