Denison Witmer is one of those singer/songwriters who wears his heart on his sleeve. To the point where it almost weighs him down. Almost. That alone is the reason he has been compared to the "next Elliott Smith". His songwriting style is nothing like the bedroom recordings of Smith. Instead, a better more obscure comparison would be that of Josh Rouse. There is a folky feel to the jangly guitars that Denison uses. Are You A Dreamer is Witmer's sixth or so album so he is definitely not new to this. This album was recorded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with some great production work by Don Peris. The album sounds like it could have been an 8-track recording only for it's intimacy. The sound is very lush, sounding like a Damien Jurado release. The songs seem very personal and the heart-on-the-sleeve thing comes out in almost all of the songs. The best thing about Denison is that his songs sound original. There are so many people that are doing the solo thing that it is really hard to make an entire album of music sound like your very own. Are You A Dreamer is entirely Denison Witmer. And you need to hear it.

I remember when he put out like 20 songs for free for his birthday. Not my style, but he has a nice voice.
