Girl Next Door is a good pop record that is saved from being generic by the quality writing of singer Marti Dodson, Saving Jane have all the parts in place to be big. Whether or not that those parts prove to be media-savvy constructs, or based on actual lasting talent, will remain to be seen. For the time being, this is an enjoyable record by a band on the move. The hit single "Girl Next Door" shines and gently rocks; "Ordinary" and , "Who's Crying Now" feature whistful lyrics and a growing confidence in the backbeat; "Happy" and "Change You" flirt with Jewel's poetics, but rightly avoid them. Dodson began writing songs in college English class, and some of her lyrics sound like life read about, rather than experienced. Still, there is enough honesty in her attempt to make her sketches come alive that is infectious and fun. And if that ain't a recipe for good pop,....
