It is nice to see a band come across my desk that doesn't really sound contrived. Sybris is a band from Chicago that have a few influences but when the whole package is put together they sound quite original. They are fronted by Angela Mullenhour, a great female vocalist that leads this alternative band down the path of new and exciting. The music on their self-titled debut isn't completely immediate but after you start to understand that this is something a little different you come to respect what they are trying to do. I can hear a little PJ Harvey in Mullenhour's voice but there seems to be a little more kick to this one. The music is unassuming but there are points where they start to play with noise and have a ball doing it. They build up walls of sound only to have Angela bring it down softly. A lot of the time is fairly gentle with some different guitar lines. Sybris shows a very fine debut album and I think they should have a strong future once people start to discover this band.
