"Sleepless" is the eerie soundtrack to a drunken, rueful subway ride, and it is fitting: Distance is a surreal, impressionistic ride through unnamed cities, corners of cities, exits from cities. "Buildings and People" adds tension to the drone, as if in anticipation of a decision. The almost religious, contemplative aura of "Suburb27" and "A Temporary Life" may hint at that answer. Wherever the songs on Marconi Union's record are going on its search for whatever answer, it is a stunning ride. Marconi Union is a two man band from Mancester that manages to sound like ten men, and to avoid the cliches of many of their fellow city musicians. Distance comes highly recommended.
