I was over in the UK earlier this year, right about the time when the Arctic Monkey's hype was running rampant. I walked into the Virgin Megastore on Oxford in London and somehow migrated towards a display of the Cribs latest and greatest, The New Fellas and it was part of a 5 for £30 so I picked it up. And am I ever glad I did. I have since been subjected to the Arctic Monkey's and am convinced that The Cribs are a much more talented band. The music is aggressive but yet very danceable. It has elements of all the good things coming out of the UK right now: Maximo Park, Futureheads, Libertines, Razorlight as well as some youthful charisma and some playing that is very rough around the edges. The New Fellas is the Second album from the three brothers who make up the band (Ryan, Ross and Gary Jarman) and man is it fun. The music has a slight pop feel to it and is very danceable. The album kicks off with the great single "Hey Scenesters" and is book-ended by another great track called "Things Aren't Gonna Change", and good entry point for all of those people disappointed with The Arctic Monkeys. The New Fellas is a diverse listen and one of the best things to come out of England in the past couple years. Sure, it's rough around the edges but then again, so was the Clash. Give them some attention will you?
I was fortunate enough to catch them open for the Death Cab for Cutie and Franz Ferdinand tour last week and they put on a really great live show. One that would have been more appropriate in a smaller club but it was still fun regardless. The crowd really got into them.
