Wolfmother is a relatively new band to reach our shores from Australia. They are are a threesome and based on the strength of an EP the band managed to get some interest and headed over to LA to record in the legendary Cherokee studios to record their impressively heavy eponymous album. Wolfmother relies very heavily on classic metal (Blue Cheer, Deep Purple, and even Led Zeppelin) while taken lessons from the likes of The White Stripes ("Joker and the Thief", "Tales From The Forest of Gnomes"). The album debuted at #3 on the Australian charts and they hope for some repeated success in the UK and the US.
The album opens up with the monolithic "Colossal". It's a beautiful way to get introduced to a hard rock band. A can hear some stoner rock influence here. The album sways in and out of the past, relying on heavy 70s chops and some newer classic rock revivalism. "Vagabond" has a bit of a "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" feel to it. The Zeppelin influence comes out big on this track. So while we don't need another "wolf" band, Wolfmother proves that they are worthy of their name. I hope and pray that I get to see this impressive band in a live setting at some point this year.
