RecommendMontreal band Black Ox Orkestar's second release, expanding on their redefinition of traditional folk forms begun on their debut. The band has absorbed some of the most soulful aspects of Yiddish, folk-punk, Balkan and Arabic music into a stew that rocks, tugs at your heart and teaches. Five stars is too lame for something this ambitious. Given John Zorn's Radical Jewish Culture Series on Tzadik and the explosion of Celtic punk, Black Ox Orkerstar ought to find a ready audience. Chanting rockers like "Bukharian and "Ikh Ken Tsevey Zayn" butt heads amiably with drinking and swooning tunes like "Violin Duet." You can dance to Nisht Azoy, think about old times, of pound a few beers in tribute to what might be found at the next party.
