Pan-American is a solo offering from Labradford's Mark Nelson, this hermetic release is all about the layers of sound. Working with primarily unadorned acoustic instruments, and gently synth tones, Nelson has produced a well-crafted meditative addition to the ambient pool with For Waiting, For Chasing. The emotional reach of the songs is strong; this is not a mood-setter for its own sake. "Love Song" and "Still Swimming" offer hope like the best in pop; "Are You Ready?" speaks like lovers speak, honestly and with a little fear to make it interesting. Flugelhorn by David Max Crawford and Tibetan Singing bowls by Steven Hess help add to the richness of Pan-American.
