I think I have finally caught up to Ryan Adams. 29 is the third of Ryan's 2005 output and although I've had it for a while I thought I would give some of the other artists out there some of my time. Regardless, I am a fan of Adams and I wouldn't miss a thing that he puts out. 29 marks the first album of the three that didn't have the Cardinals playing on it with him. More personal? I would say so. And with it being more personal it's not near as immediate. This results in critics hammering it a little more than usual. The thing is, it is usually albums like 29 that stand the test of time. Take the the ever-so-gentle "Elizabeth, You Were Born To Play That Part". It has to be the the most beautiful song that Ryan Adams has written. I also enjoyed the Tejano flavored "The Sadness", adding a new feel to Adams songwriting. The thing with most artists releasing 3 albums in one year is that songs are bound to get weak and albums would tend to have a lot of filler. Not so with Adams. His songwriting bucket never seems to empty. The thing he does know how to do is to put the similar feeling songs on one album. The diversity is not so extreme that it turns off people. 29 is not Ryan Adams finest work but again, it's far from his worst.
