I remember being quite taken with Badmarsh & Shri’s 1999 debut “Dancing Drums. It was a fine world fusion album that would push all others like. The problem with the album wasn’t what was on it, but what it was on (meaning Tommy Boy records). Now that Badmarsh and Shri have found a new home with the new Nettwerk imprint Nutone (which specializes in the world electronica fusion thing) you can tell that they are much more comfortable. If you are like most people, this may be the first time you have come across these two and you may not know what to expect. The group is probably best fit into the Asian Underground movement but they reach out far broader than just that pigeonhole. There are loads of beats surrounded by beautiful worldly sounds and vocals but take track 7, “Sajanna for instance. All it consists of is a flute and an intricate guitar piece. It is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard. “Bang has a full blow string ensemble playing along with the heavy drumbeat. There are many treats intertwined in the overall relaxed album. Badmarsh and Shri are a welcome addition to the ever growing and eclectic Nutone Records.
