Singer Tim Rutili deepens the swampy porch growl that began a few records ago, when the remnants of what once was Red Red Meat became Califone. Roomsound delivers on the claustrophobia implied in the title. Songs like "Trout Silk" and "Fisherman's Wife" brood over a few shots of whiskey, and keep digging into the emotions even when the flies start biting. "Porno Starlet vs. Rodeo Clown" is Dylanesque in its ambivalence: is this profound, or just a cool, fucked up story? Both. Gently rocking but with menace, Rutili and band know their sordid country and grunge myths, and they add some new ones to the repertoire. Guitarists, get to work and learn how to play "Rattlesnakes Smell Like Split Cucumber." Now.
