I don't know about you, but I've dated plenty of hippy and/or punk girls who spent too much time in forced ironic conversation about favorite cereal or which episode of Tom & Jerry reminded them of their dad. Kimya Dawson sings in deadpan, child-like drawl about the mundane and the more mundane. While her voice may be an acquired taste for some, she hops and skips across a tune, dropping some lyrical gems here and there, and while some songs are undermined by preciousness and preaching-to-the-converted political views, others suit her style to a tee. The barely 40 second "I miss you" has a poignancy that wins us to her side, and overcomes some of the more cloying moments. Equally strong are "My Mom" and "The Competition", where her spontaneous candor and willingness to let the listener into her emotional life produce a powerful intimacy. You either like anti-folk or you don't; at some point, playing rudimentary licks and singing off-key aren't so ironic and hip anymore; other goods need to be in the basket. Dawson had enough in the tank to appear to be in it for the right, honest reasons.
