Loose Fur - Born Again In The USA
Loose Fur's 2003 self-titled release did nothing for me. It sounded so much like a side project that it was incoherent and came unsuccessful. Well, Tweedy and O'Rourke are back at it again but this time have succeeded where they had failed. Born Again In The USA is a nice collection of tracks that rock and meander but all have the feeling of coherence.
The album opens with a Guided By Voices-like track called "Hey Chicken". It's one of the loudest on the album. "Ruling Class" takes it back into a bit more of a traditional Wilco-Being There feel. Then on "Answers To Your Questions" we get a beautifully gentle track by Jim. The finger picking and arrangement are heavenly. Then with "Apostolic" there is something amazing that happens. The song has a bit of a chaotic feel to it but the acoustic guitar keeps everything in check. This is my favorite track in the set. The O'Rourke fronted "Stupid As The Sun" has a fun jerky feel to it. "Wreckroom" has an almost jazzy feel to it with a few surprises. It is 8 minutes long but it takes the listener on a nice aside from the album. Overall, I think Tweedy, Kotche, and O'Rourke should be very proud of Born Again In The USA. It proves that Loose Fur is a necessary outlet.
