Just like Monty Python is the best example of Dada, bands like Matmos and Mogwai are the best examples of the Cut-Up. Humor and honesty trump intellectual posing every time. Matmos' mix of found audio, ambient and industrial funk has a dark3r edge than Mogwai, which means that when they are on, as on this release, they can scare the crap out of you. While the title track can rub the monotony bone toward the end, the rest of the tracks are short, sharp and shocking. Guest appearances by Bjork, Kronos Quartet and Maja Ratke are understated and helpful, not distracting. Matmos devotes a lot of sonic time to giving props to transgressive radical artists, and these are the highlights of the record:"Tract for Valerie Solanas", "Solo Buttons for Joe Meek", and the stunning "Germs Burn for Darby Crash." "Rag for William S. Burroughs" is the greasy creepy-crawly soundtrack to the film Cronenberg should have made. Release number five is Matmos' number one delivery so far.
